Hi folks. I have a single, large, stubborn wart on my knee that has been there for five years. I've literally tried everything: apple cider vinegar, duct tape, salicylic acid, even a home freezing kit. It shrinks and then grows back. My GP said I could try laser, but I'm skeptical because nothing else worked. Does laser actually kill the root, or will it just grow back again like it did with the other treatments? I don't want to waste money.

The reason warts grow back is that you didn't kill the 'mother' – the root of the virus deep in the basal layer of the skin. Topical acids only burn the surface. Freezing only kills the top few millimeters. Laser, specifically a vascular laser, targets the tiny blood vessels that feed the wart. No blood supply = no oxygen = the viral tissue dies. For a large, old wart, the doctor might use a different type of laser (ablative) that actually vaporizes the tissue layer by layer. This is more invasive but has a very high success rate (over 90% for a single treatment). The key is that the doctor has to go deep enough to reach the base of the wart. If they are too conservative, it can grow back. Ask for a doctor who uses a 'pulse dye laser' or 'CO2 laser' for resistant warts. The healing takes about 2-3 weeks, and you'll have a small scar, but it beats having a wart for five more years.

I had a massive wart on my heel for eight years. I spent a fortune on over-the-counter garbage. I finally saw a podiatrist who did laser wart removal. He used a CO2 laser. He numbed me up, then I smelled burning (gross, but quick). He literally carved out the wart. It left a hole the size of a pea. I had to keep it covered with a bandage for two weeks. It healed into a small, flat scar. That was three years ago. The wart has never come back. For a stubborn, old wart, vaporization laser is the nuclear option. It works. But you need to be prepared for real healing time, not a 'walk out fine' procedure. If you want to see what the different types of lasers do, look here: https://bellasanamedspa.com/service/laser-wart-removal. Don't give up. The laser will kill it for good.
